| The International Theater is
dedicated to producing quality English language theatre in Vienna,
serving as an educational resource for teachers of English and
literature in Austria, and providing a
creative outlet for local artists. The International Theater is an English language theater owned and operated by an American, right near the heart of old Vienna. Cleveland's Marilyn Close and Denver's William Wallace, both experienced singers, were drawn to the culturally rich old city on the Danube by its traditions and continuing name as the music capital of Europe. After working with various companies (both opera and theater), they decided to open their own theater. The first performance (Blithe Spirit, by Noel Coward) premiered in Graz in November 1974. For the next few years the Wallaces lived a mostly vagabond existence, touring shows like Samuel Becket's Happy Days around the provinces. After brief stints with various spaces in Vienna, the International Theater found its permanent home on January 14, 1980 at Porzellangasse 8 in Vienna's ninth district. The first production was The Effect Of Gamma Rays On Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds by Paul Zindel. Since then over 100 plays have been produced, including: The Glass Menagerie Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf Long Day's Journey into Night Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Our Town A Moon for the Misbegotten A Touch of the Poet Of Mice and Men Angels in America Children of a Lesser God Animal Farm Happy Days Driving Miss Daisy Death and the Maiden Hamlet Twelfth Night Pygmalion Arms and the Man Candida Eden End Fool for Love Art Copenhagen Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll Betrayal Look Back in Anger The Elephant Man The Little Foxes The Gin Game Skin of Our Teeth The Matchmaker The Removalists The Collector The Miracle Worker Crimes of the Heart On Golden Pond Painting Churches Night Mother Agnes of God The Dresser The Trip to Bountiful The Woolgatherer Educating Rita Shirley Valentine A Life in the Theatre The Importance of Being Ernest Private Lives Blythe Spirit Fallen Angels Charlie's Aunt Harvey Arsenic and Old Lace The Odd Couple Barefoot in the Park Play it Again Sam What the Butler Saw The Foreigner Baby with the Bathwater Beyond Therapy Parallel Lives Moon Over Buffalo Lend Me a Tenor Greater Tuna The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) Three Men in a Boat Sylvia An Inspector Calls The Mousetrap Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde The Hound of the Baskervilles Dracula Rebecca Dial "M" for Murder Deathtrap Wait Until Dark Gaslight Misery Into the Woods Quilters In addition, The International Theatre has also hosted over 80 evenings of literature readings, lectures, workshops, play readings, and charity events, as well as numerous guest performers and several premiers by unknown authors. The annual production of A Christmas Carol has become an institution in Vienna. Co-founder William Wallace passed away in the summer of 2000, and Marilyn has continued on with the tradition of producing quality English language theater in Vienna- in an intimate setting with a family atmosphere. |
